Ethylene is a hydrocarbon gas with the formula C2H4. It is the simplest alkene and one of the most important industrial chemicals. Ethylene is used as a precursor for the synthesis of many polymers, such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and ethylene glycol. Ethylene is also involved in plant growth and development, as it acts as a hormone that regulates fruit ripening, flower opening, and leaf senescence.
