Plant Pigments
Plant pigments are colored molecules essential for plant life, primarily enabling photosynthesis and providing coloration.
The most common is chlorophyll (green), which absorbs red and blue light to convert light energy into chemical energy. Carotenoids (yellow, orange) act as accessory pigments, absorbing wavelengths chlorophyll misses and protecting the plant from photo-damage. Anthocyanins (red, purple, blue) are water-soluble pigments, mainly in fruits and flowers, which help attract pollinators and seed dispersers, and offer protection against environmental stresses like cold and UV light.
Horti Silvi Pastoral System
The Horti-Silvi-Pastoral system is a specific type of agroforestry that sustainably integrates three different land-use components on the same piece of land.
The name breaks down the components:
Horti (Horticulture): Involves the cultivation of fruit trees, vegetables, or ornamental plants (e.g., in orchards).
Silvi (Silviculture): Involves the growing and management of forest trees, which can provide timber, fuel, fodder, and improve soil health.
Pastoral (Pasture/Livestock): Involves the management of grasses and legumes (pasture/forage) and the grazing of livestock (like cattle, sheep, or goats).
